the first lie

kate lied to me for the first time this morning. she took some blocks away from jack and when i asked her if she apologized (knowing full well that she didn't), she hung her head and said 'yes'. i asked her again if she had apologized and she just looked at me.

how do you explain to a 3-year-old what a lie is? and is it normal for my heart to be breaking into pieces over this?

My kids started that about 3 yrs old. The tell is always that they won't look you in the eye. Their little minds are growing and discovering "options" like telling a fib...because they do "know" they did something wrong and they don't want to be in trouble. I always said very honestly that "Mommy saw what happened and I don't think you told me the truth". Then I'd ask them (eye contact is important) to tell me agian. BIG hug and I'm proud of you followed the truth. **Love the pictures, adorable children!!!

I'm with Jodie. I also make a point of explaining (still!) that the lie disappoints me more than most anything else they could do - so that fessing up is always the better choice.
